It's a truism of freelance work that if you're caught resting on your existing workload something will inevitably come along and eliminate a chunk of it. So even while you're working, you need to seek new work, update skills, open your field of vision to find new possibilities. None of which come naturally to me.
At the back of my mind I've been fantasizing about moving somewhere new and finding a job in a donut shop or at a deli counter. I like the idea of showing up at a set time each day, and not having the whole business depend on my spending every waking moment stitching together little joblets to pay the bills. But it does pay the bills. And I'd probably make bad potato salad.
If I'm out of touch for months at a stretch again it's because I'm working on my Dale Carnegie skills, trying to keep one step ahead of things while cultivating new growth.
